Summary

The Department of Music proposes to make a minor change to the B.A. in Music degree by adding one additional semester of the 0-credit Advanced Recital & Concert Attendance course (MUSC 3300) [this is a new course; see pages 1 through 4 of the proposal titled “2010 – Music 2 – New Courses”].

In addition to 34 credits of General Education, all music majors are required to take 47 credits in the Core Music Curriculum [see the proposal titled “2010 – Music 3 – Changes to the Core Music Curriculum”].

Students in both Music Performance concentrations will also be required to take the following MUSC Major Requirements:

  • 18 credits of a designated minor or a second major
  • 12 credits of electives. Students may count not more than 6 hours of music electives (all at the 3000-level or above) towards this requirement. The remaining electives must be in areas outside of music; this may include additional courses in the minor or second major.
  • MUPF 11xx: Primary Ensemble (1 semester beyond those required in the Core Music Curriculum) (MUPF 1110, MUPF 1112, MUPF 1113, MUPF 1115, MUPF 1120, MUPF 1121, MUPF 1122, MUPF 1123, MUPF 1155, MUPF 1160, or MUPF 1168)
  • MUPF 32xx: Advanced Applied Music (1 semester beyond those required in the Core Music Curriculum) (MUPF 3240–3259)
  • MUSC 3300: Advanced Recital & Concert Attendance (1 semester beyond those required in the Core Music Curriculum) [this is a new course; see pages 1 through 4 of the proposal titled “2010 – Music 2 – New Courses”]. MUSC 4900: Senior Project

The Bachelor of Arts in Music degree differs from a Bachelor of Music degree in that it is designed for students who want both intensive training in music and the opportunity to explore other areas of academic study.  The curriculum consists of 42 34 hours of General Education; 46 47 hours in the Core Music Curriculum, including private lessons, ensembles, music theory, ear training, piano and music history; 18 hours of a designated minor or second major; and 18 12 hours of electives and additional music classes. For specific course requirements and policies governing the B.A. in Music degree, refer to the Department of Music Student Handbook.  The culminating experience for this degree is an academic senior project.
