Summary

The Department of Music proposes to make changes to the concentration codes for music education concentrations in banner.

Prior to Spring 2014, the two music education concentrations were coded as follows:

  • BM-MUED-MUIN = Bachelor of Music in Music Education (MUED) with a concentration in Instrumental/General Music Education (MUIN)
  • BM-MUED-MUVO = Bachelor of Music in Music Education (MUED) with a concentration in Choral/General Music Education (MUVO)

The concentration codes were changed as of Spring 2014, in part to differentiate between students who had and had not been admitted to the Professional Music Education track, for advising purposes.  Music education concentrations are currently coded as follows:

  • BM-MUSC-INPF, with an ITED attribute = Bachelor of Music with a concentration in Instrumental/General Music Education, is not yet admitted to the Professional Music Education track.
  • BM-MUSC-IGME, with an ITED attribute = Bachelor of Music with a concentration in Instrumental/General Music Education, has been admitted to the Professional Music Education track (IGME = Instrumental/General Music Education).
  • BM-MUSC-VOPF, with an ITED attribute = Bachelor of Music with a concentration in Choral/General Music Education, is not yet admitted to the Professional Music Education track.
  • BM-MUSC-CGME, with an ITED attribute = Bachelor of Music with a concentration in Choral/General Music Education, has been admitted to the Professional Music Education track (CGME = Choral/General Music Education).

The problem with these codes is that it is difficult to separate pre-Professional Music Education track music education concentrations (BM-MUSC-INPF and BM-MUSC-VOPF) from music performance concentrations for the purposes of tracking and advising:

  • BM-MUSC-INPF = Bachelor of Music with a concentration in Instrumental Performance (INPF = Instrumental Performance)
  • BM-MUSC-VOPF = Bachelor of Music with a concentration in Vocal Performance (VOPF = Vocal Performance)

Accordingly, the Department of Music is requesting the following changes to the concentration codes for pre-Professional Music Education track music education concentrations:

  • BM-MUSC-INPFPIGM, with an ITED attribute = Bachelor of Music with a concentration in Instrumental/General Music Education, but not yet admitted to the Professional Music Education track (PIGM = Pre-Instrumental/General Music).
  • BM-MUSC-VOPFPCGM, with an ITED attribute = Bachelor of Music with a concentration in Choral/General Music Education, but not yet admitted to the Professional Music Education track (PCGM = Pre-Choral/General Music).
