Summary

The Department of Music proposes to clarify the concentrations within the B.M. in Music Education curriculum, along with making some minor changes to the requirements.

There are currently three concentrations within the B.M. in Music Education: Instrumental, Vocal, and General Music. With the curricular changes that were approved in April 2009, these tracks have been consolidated into two concentrations. Accordingly, the following changes should be made:

  • The General Music Education concentration (MUED-GE-MJ) should be discontinued.
  • The Instrumental Music Education concentration (MUED-IN-MJ) should be changed to

Instrumental/General Music Education (MUED-I/G), and all students in the former should be migrated to the latter.

  • The Vocal Music Education concentration (MUED-VO-MJ) should be changed to

Choral/General Music Education (MUED-C/G), and all students in the former should be migrated to the latter.

Incoming students will be placed in either the MUED-C/G or the MUED-I/G concentration during their entrance auditions. It is impossible to be a Music Education major without belonging to one of those two concentrations.

In addition to 34 credits of General Education, all music majors are required to take 47 credits in the Core Music Curriculum [see the proposal titled "2010 - Music 3  Changes to the Core Music Curriculum"]. Students in both Music Education concentrations will also be required to take the following MUED Major Requirements:

  • EDUC 4290 or EDUC 4291: Modifying Instruction for Learners with Diverse Needs
  • MUED 2100: Introduction to Music Education
  • MUED 2141: Music Development and Learning
  • MUED 2200: Foundations of Music Education
  • MUED 4192: General Music Methods
  • MUED 4192L: General Methods Lab
  • MUED 4270: Discipline and Assessment
  • MUED 4467: Student Teaching
  • MUSC 2151: Introduction to Music Technology
  • MUSC 3134: Fundamentals of Conducting
  • Improvisationor Arranging or Composition(MUSC 2235 or MUSC 4235 or MUSC
  • 4240) [see the proposal titled "2010 - Music 1 "Editorial Changes" for the renumbering of MUSC 4235]

Students in the Choral/General Music Education concentration will be further required to take the following MUED-BM Choral/General Concentration Requirements:

  • MUSC 1150: Introduction to Instruments
  • MUED 4190: Choral Methods
  • MUED 4190L: Choral Methods Lab
  • MUSC 2137: Phonetics and Articulation I
  • MUSC 2138: Phonetics and Articulation II
  • MUSC 3135: Choral Conducting
  • MUSC 3151: Accompanying for Non-Pianists [see the proposal titled "2010 - Music 1 Editorial Changes" for the title change]
  • MUSC 4137: Vocal Pedagogy

Conversely, students in the Instrumental/General Music Education concentration will be required to take the following MUED-BM Instrumental/General Concentration Requirements:

  • MUED 4194: Instrumental Methods
  • MUED 4194L: Instrumental Methods Lab
  • MUPF 1117: Instrumental Lab Ensemble (4 semesters)
  • MUSC 1222: Jazz Ensemble Techniques
  • MUSC 1223: Woodwind Techniques
  • MUSC 1225: Brass Techniques
  • MUSC 1227: String Techniques
  • MUSC 1129: Percussion Techniques
  • MUSC 1237: Class Voice
  • MUSC 2222: Marching Band Techniques
  • MUSC 3136: Instrumental Conducting
