ANTH 2144. Neanderthals and Us. (3) Prerequisite: ANTH 2141 or permission of instructor. This lecture/seminar course explores the life, times, culture and fate of the Neanderthals. Using data derived from the fossil record, archaeology, and genetics, we will examine crucial questions about Neanderthals, including: Who were they? What bio-cultural adaptations allowed them to expand their geographic range and exploit diverse habitats so successfully? What was their lifestyle like and how were they culturally distinct from previous hominids? What happened to them? Do they have any relationship to modern humans like us?
