The interdisciplinary Minor in Film Studies is designed to allow students to develop knowledge of film and video as an art form while fulfilling the requirements for one of the approved degree programs at the University. The College of Liberal Arts & Sciences courses that satisfy the minor represent different aspects of film and video art: (1) Culture, (2) History, (3) Theory, and (4) Production.Students have the option to earn a Certificate in Video Production with the Minor in Film Studies by completing additional course-work in production.
The Certificate in Video Production is designed for students who wish to develop practical skills in the art of filmmaking. It can be earned in conjunction with the Minor in Film Studies or as a stand-alone certificate. The courses that lead to a Certificate in Video Production represent different technical and aesthetic aspects of filmmaking, including screenwriting, directing, producing, acting, and cinematography using video.
Minor in Film Studies
The Minor in Film Studies requires the completion of 18 19 hours of approved courses.as follows: (1) FILM 2201 Introduction to Film Studies and (2) at least five additional courses representing at least three of the departments offering the minor. Courses that satisfy the minor are as follows:

In addition, topics courses or seminars offered by American Studies, Communication Studies, and departments not presently associated with the minor in Film Studies may be applied to the minor upon approval of the Director.
Students may elect as one of their courses an internship that focuses on a video or film project in any of the participating departments. Students who choose this option will sign up under the internship course number of the department that seems most appropriate. Please consult the Director of the Film Studies Program on any questions about Internships.

Minor in Film Studies with a Certificate in Video Production
The Minor in Film Studies with a Certificate in Video Production requires the completion of 22 hours of approved courses.

Courses that satisfy the minor are offered by Africana Studies, American Studies, Communication Studies, English, Film, French, German, History, Languages and Culture Studies, Religious Studies, and Women’s and Gender Studies. All courses counting for the Minor are printed on the Film Studies Homepage before pre-registration in the semester before they are being offered.

FILM 3121. Intermediate Film/Video Production.
Credit Hours 3
Builds on the knowledge of FILM 3120, honing camera, writing and editing skills to produce a short film:, narrative feature, documentary, experimental, or music video. Prerequisite, FILM 3120 or consent of instructor with approval of film studies staff. Prerequisite, FILM 3120 or approval of the Film Studies Director with consent of instructor.
FILM 3220. Introduction to Screenwriting.
Credit Hours 3
Introduction to the craft of screenwriting through a series of shortform screenplay exercises. Intensive study of the basic elements of story and script formatting and analysis of representative films.
FILM 3221. Intermediate Screenwriting: Feature Film
Credit Hours 3
Focus on developing a premise and outline of a story; crafting the plot and characters; and writing the screenplay in sequences. Analysis of the plot and storytelling techniques of a variety of feature films. Assumes knowledge of script formatting and story structure. Also addresses writing comedy and writing for television. Prerequisite, FILM 3220 or FILM 3120 or approval of the Film Studies Director with consent of instructor.
FILM 4120. Production and Directing.
Credit Hours 3
Advanced study of the elements of producing and directing a film project, including, working with actors, writers, and other members of a film team. Prerequisites, 2 of the following courses: FILM 3120, FILM 3121, FILM 3220, FILM 3221 or approval of the Film Studies Director with consent of instructor.
FILM 4220. Film Festivals: Production and Theory. (3)
Credit Hours 3
Focus on the broad history of film festivals and the theory behind programming of films. Includes modules on promotion and marketing of festivals.
FILM 4690. Capstone Course in Film Studies.
Credit Hours 1
Survey of career options for Film Studies students (minors and certificate holders), directed professional development (preparation of resume and portfolio), and completion of a personal statement on their work in the Film Studies program. Graded on a Pass/No Credit basis.
