GEOL 4185. Mineralogy, Economics, and the Environment. (3) Prerequisites: GEOL 3115 Mineralogy or permission of instructor. This course will focus on the origin, distribution, and consumption rate of the Earth’s mineral resources. Lectures and assignments are intended to promote understanding of the geologic, engineering, and economic factors that govern mineral exploration and production. Environmental impacts of the mining industry are also discussed. (On demand)
GEOL 3105: The Earth’s Resources: Sustainability and the Environmental Impacts of Recovery. (3) Prerequisite GEOL 1200 Physical Geology. This course will focus on the origin, distribution, consumption rates and environmental impacts of mining and processing the Earth’s mineral resources. A significant portion of the class lectures will promote a deeper understanding of the current oil, gas and coal industries and their relationship to the Worlds energy production and use. The long- term sustainability of these energy systems will also be discussed. (Yearly)
