MUED 4141. 2121. Music Development and Learning. (2) Prerequisite: MUED 2200. acceptance into the Professional Music Education track. This course is for all music education majors and is designed to provide foundational skills for music teaching in grades K-12, regardless of specialization. Students will approach the teaching of music through various perspectives of developmental and learning theory, music acquisition and learning theory, and different approaches skills. Students will address their own philosophies of music education and will develop lesson planning strategies based on
those philosophies guided by the National and North Carolina Standards for the Arts. Students will also explore reading instruction within the music curriculum. A minimumof five hours field experience through observation is required. (Fall) This course teachesmusic educators how to deliver developmentally appropriate music instruction in gradesK-12. Students will explore and manipulate teaching strategies through variousresearched perspectives of: (1) developmental learning theory; (2) music acquisition/learning theories; and (3) teaching music to students with special needs. A field component of ten hours minimum is required. Three contact hours (Spring).
MUED 4192 General Music Methods and Materials K-12. (3) (2)Prerequisite: MUED 4141.MUSC 2400. Co-requisite MUED 4192L. This course is designed for the general music specialist.The course includes general music methods and materials for elementary grades through high school. The primary focus will be on elementary schoolgeneral music but will extend into teaching general music, and non-performance basedmusic courses in grades 6 through 12. Students will experience applications of Gordon�sMusic Learning Theory, and the approaches of Orff, Kodaly and Jacques-Dalcroze. Ccurrent school music theories and approaches to general music teaching. and mMaterials will also be explored and discussed. Rehearsal techniques, repertoire, teaching strategies, methods, and materials of teaching and administrating an instrumental music program in the public school.Study and analysis through individual evaluation and in-class group performance of current elementary instrumental method books and teaching strategies.
