Summary

 The Department of Music proposes four minor edits to the course descriptions for MUSC 1300 and MUSC 3300. 
 

  1. To change the course titles from “Recital and Concert Attendance” and “Advanced Recital and Concert Attendance” to “Performance Class” and “Advanced Performance Class” to better represent their positions in our curricula. 
  2. To add masterclasses to the course requirements.  While all students will still be expected to perform in a formal recital at least once a semester, they will also have the opportunity to participate in masterclasses.  Masterclasses are seminar-like environments that allow students to perform works-in-progress and receive feedback from faculty, peers, and guest artists.
  3. To add enrollment in Junior Recital Preparation (MUPF 3440-3459) or Senior Recital Preparation (MUPF 4440-4459) as a co-requisite of MUSC 3300.  The course descriptions for MUPF 3440-3459 and MUPF 4440-4459 already list MUSC 3300 as a co-requisite, so this change merely confirms an existing requirement.
  4. To change the wording “May be repeated for credit” in the course description for MUSC 3300 to simply “May be repeated.”  MUSC 3300 is a 0-credit class, and cannot therefore be repeated “for credit.”

The masterclasses that are being added to MUSC 1300 and MUSC 3300 will extend those that are already in place for guitar, violin, cello, voice, and saxophone to all instruments, and will necessitate the deletion of those separate masterclasses from the catalog.

MUSC 1300. Performance Class Recital and Concert Attendance. (0) Corequisite: Applied Music (MUPF 1240-1259).  This is a lab course for Applied Music that provides students with the experience of participating in masterclasses and formal recitals performing in front of an audience. By also serving as audience members and assisting during public concerts, the students cultivate proper audience decorum, contribute to a professional environment for all university performances, and increase their knowledge of the repertoire for a wide variety of instruments. Graded on a Pass/No Credit basis. May be repeated. (Fall, Spring)

MUSC 3300. Advanced Performance Class Recital and Concert Attendance. (0)  Corequisite: Advanced Applied Music (MUPF 3240-3259), Junior Recital Preparation (MUPF 3440-3459), or Senior Recital Preparation (MUPF 4440-4459). This is a lab course for Advanced Applied Music and Recital Preparation courses that provides students with multiple experiences of participating in masterclasses and formal recitals performing in front of an audience. By also serving as audience members and assisting during public concerts, the students continue to cultivate proper audience decorum, contribute to a professional environment for all university performances, and increase their knowledge of the repertoire for a wide variety of instruments. Graded on a Pass/No Credit basis. May be repeated for credit. (Fall, Spring)
